Richard Moon has worked as a lawyer for over 25 years. He has a broad range of experience in private practice and in-house roles in New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom and Hong Kong.
Richard has considerable general litigation experience including civil, regulatory, and public law litigation. He is an experienced advocate.
Richard’s current focus is advising professional services firms and professional bodies in relation to all aspects of their business, including prosecution services.
Recent roles include:
Prosecuting before the Disciplinary Tribunal of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants, the New Zealand Lawyers and Conveyancers Disciplinary Tribunal and the New Zealand Registered Architects Board;
Acting for the New Zealand Institute of Valuers in High Court proceedings concerning the interpretation of the Valuers Act 1948;
Acting for private clients in judicial review proceedings against the Commissioner of Crown Lands; and
Acting for the owners of an earthquake damaged building in High Court proceedings brought against insurers.
Before he returned to New Zealand in 2006, Richard worked for the Insolvency Service in London and as a commercial litigation lawyer for global law firms Ashurst (then Blake Dawson Waldron) in Australia and Kennedys in Hong Kong.
During his time in Australia, Richard was part of the team acting for the liquidators of HIH Insurance in various recovery actions against professional advisers. In Hong Kong, Richard acted for Ernst & Young in its defence of allegations of audit negligence arising from the collapse of Semi Tech Corporation (including the businesses of Akai and Singer).
Moving in-house, Richard has served as Legal Counsel, China for Ernst & Young Hong Kong, New Zealand Legal Counsel for international engineering consultancy Aurecon, General Counsel/General Manager (Regulation) for the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants and, most recently, General Counsel for KPMG New Zealand.
In these roles Richard gained extensive experience managing the legal function within global teams, including the negotiation of commercial contracts, mergers and acquisitions, mitigating litigation risk and managing external legal providers.
